Here at Smokin, we build boards that we like to ride. When there is a technology out there that is the best available, why would you want to ride anything else? Our pursuit of the perfect snowboard has been a driving force since day one, with a constant progression and a search for the best materials and designs available. Since 2006, the path to snowboard enlightenment got wavy. Smokin was hot on the heels of our first ever TWS Good Wood award for the Superpark. Mervin Manufacturing’s Stephen Cobb had created a new design for utilizing pressure disbursement to increase edge hold that they called Magne Traction. Mervin really started making moves with this new technology winning board tests left and right and people got a taste of what they had created. Once Smokin Jay had the opportunity to get a Magne Traction board under his feet, he knew what must be done. It totally changed the way he perceived the ride and what was capable with the board. Detuning edges without fear and loathing of ice patches, clinging to firm faces at impossible angles, every facet of snowboarding was enhanced. Magne Traction was a game changer and he had to have it. Being a former Lib Tech rider and long time friend of the brand, he approached them about an independent license. The heads at Mervin must have been in a good mood that day because they agreed! For the last four years Smokin has been the only independent manufacturer to have a license on Magne Traction. In 2011, big mountain pioneer Jeremy Jones is launching his own brand which will have the second independent license. We are humbled to be amongst such prestigious names and Jeremy’s use of the tech only serves to legitimize its usefulness. Smokin would like to throw a huge thank you to the guys at Mervin for their commitment to the progression of snowboarding and the support they have given us by allowing us to use magne traction to make great snowboards.
WHAT IS IT?
In traditional snowboards, your energy when making a turn is pushed outwards towards your tip and tail. The harder you drive into the turn the more force is exerted onto the flex of the board, eventually causing you to wash out. Magne Traction technology fixes this dilemma by introducing 7 contact points along the entire effective edge most notably underfoot and between your bindings. These points disburse your weight evenly along the entire edge and transfer energy directly underfoot. The result is a powerful, stable ride with unmatched edge grip in any condition.
Smokin’s blend of Magne Traction is unique from that of Mervin’s in 2 ways. First, our magne traction bumps are equidistant and the height of each is the same with the exception of our contact point. Secondly ours is slightly less aggressive than most Mervin Magne Traction. Any way you slice it, boards with Magne Traction rip. Keep your edges sharp and conquer ice with valor, or dull ’em out and still hold an edge when you are lapping the park. Run ’em beveled for a catch free ride all over the mountain, or round em out for street shredding. No matter where you ride one things for sure, you will never go back to traditional sidecut again.
With the explosion of rocker in recent years it is even more important to have a Magne traction board. Rockers take away your edge hold by reducing contact with the snow and limiting leverage by reversing your camber. Without the transfer of energy that Magne Traction provides directly underfoot you might as well be shredding a lunch tray!
